Today is Rangali Bihu. I called up my family and friends to greet them. Yesterday was Garu Bihu. This is celebrated to worship the cows, who are the backbone of the Assamese agriculture (although many new technologies are finding their places, they are still regarded as the most precious thing in a farmer’s family). On that particular day, the cows are given a bath, tied with new ropes in the evening and are offered many kind of vegetables. Basically this is their day.
I remember when I was at my home my uncle, who has two-three pairs of cow, used to go the pond and bath the cows. In the evening they are tied with new ropes and fed with different kinds of vegetables, especially brinjal and everybody sings......
“laow kha, bengena kha, (eat gurd and brinjal)
Basare basare barhi jaa. (Grow up every year.)
Maar haru, baper haru (your mother and father are small I size)
Toi hobi bar garu” (but you will become a cow of big size).

This is Rangali bihu. A festival of green, music, color and togetherness.
