At the present time the identity issue is the most burning issue in India. Here I am going to mention three incidents and leave the whole thing to the readers to interpret.
Incident I
Place: Dergaon Kamal Dowerah College Hostel, Dergaon, Assam.
Time: A summer evening of 2006.
What: An anonymous from the boys’; hostel wrote a letter to the Prefect of the Girls’ hostel asking the Bangladeshis to Leave for Bangladesh. But there were no Bangladeshis in the hostel. Who that anonymous addressed were the Muslim boarders? The Prefect was also a Muslim. N.B: In Assam there us a misconception that the Muslims hail from Bangladesh. But the truth is that they are in Assam for the last 800 years.
Incident II
Place: Border area between Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
When: First week of January, 2008
What: I traveled through Orissa in the first week of January with my friends. There I visited a school, which is a bilingual with both Oriya and Telugu as teaching medium. But majority of the students are from the Oriya medium. Earlier there used to be teachers from both the medium. But in the very recent years the Government has stopped appointing Telugu teachers, which is why the number of Telugu students is decreasing in a fast rate. They are forced to opt for other schools.
Incident III
Place: Delhi.
When: 29th June, 2008
What: On that very particular day hundreds of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Hijra, kothi, Queer walked, singing and dancing, on the roads of Delhi. What for? To assert their sexual identities. Some one from that huge gathering suddenly shouted out, “oh, I am on the TV. They will get to know that I am a………….What will happen now?”
