Kite Runner!
We are celebrating the 61st Independence Day tomorrow. Yes we got independence sixty-one years before. In almost every part of the country, people are getting ready for the celebration of the great day. In Delhi people are ready with their colorful kites; the government is ready with the pageantry. I have experienced this kind of colorful celebration for the second time. Yes for the “second” time! You can ask me why am I saying it, what about the last fifty nine times. The answer is simple-I had not seen any celebrations. I think nobody in North-east India has seen a celebration on Independence Day. Sorry I can’t say that I had not seen any celebration. Yes I have seen! We do ‘Celebrate’! The banned outfits declare ‘Assam Bandh’, explode bombs in strategic points, kills innocent children (for example the Dhemaji killing of 2004) people, all transport facility is terminated for the day. So people cannot go out or fear to go out. This is the way we 'celebrate'. This is the situation I had been experiencing throughout my life until I came to Delhi. This is the experience my little sister has been experiencing for the last eighteen years (she is eighteen now). So, when I told her people fly kites here on this particular day, she asked me ‘why?’ She could not even imagine that it’s a Day to be celebrated. Cannot we change the situation? Cannot we create a situation for the generations to come where they will also celebrate, they will also be able to fly kites?
